Kenneth Patchen, love poems of

Because this is the way it is, we are still putting away books. We have purged, and purged, books. (We stopped actively buying books quite some time ago.) We have given away and given away and even sold books. (Why do I want to write books?) I am tired of stuff and stuff and stuff. This transfers to books, when really, if there is good stuff to have, to hold on to, that would be books.

What to do with this one, tell me?

WE GO OUT TOGETHER INTO THE STARING TOWN

We go out together into the staring town
and buy cheese and bread and little jugs with flowered labels

Everywhere is a tent where we put on our whirling show

A great deal has been said of the handless serpents
Which war has set loose in the gay milk of our heads

But because you braid your hair and taste like the honey of heaven
We go together into town and buy wine and yellow candles.

I vote to keep this one. Let’s you and I go into town and buy wine and candles - both disposable items that won’t need long-term storage :)
