Robert Birnbaum talks to Ron Rash, who looks none the worse for wear and comes off sounding as nice as I remember. Good to hear about the Western Carolina University distinguished professor of Appalachian studies. Though it was maybe not so surprising as pleasantly interesting to hear that he loved the 17 years teaching at tech. Since the year(s ?) we shared the State Fiction Prize, Ron Rash has kept writing and, by all accounts, writing well, and now has a solid body of — selling — work to show for it. This is good. I want to get these books of his and catch up. I want to read some of the other titles he and RB term “obscure.” The never-ending reading list…
